Council approvals on the South Coast

Whether you need council approval depends on the size of your shed, your zoning, boundary setbacks and what your local council allows. Across the South Coast you're dealing with several councils, including Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla, and each one applies the NSW planning rules slightly differently.

Some builds qualify as exempt development under NSW rules. Others need a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) or a full Development Application (DA), particularly in coastal zones, bushfire-prone areas, flood-prone land or anywhere near heritage overlays.
